Why I wear an alert band

I have the pleasure of working with some inquisitive 16 year olds ... and in fact some inquisitive older students ... who are not backwards in coming forwards and like to ask questions. Something I think is fantastic I might add, if you don’t ask you don’t know!
Recently a couple of people have asked me about my medical alert band, what it is and why I wear it.
Here’s my answer in a nutshell, I wear it to alert people to my medical condition and to help them possibly save my life should a serious seizure ever occur. That’s basically it.
Why do a lot of other people not wear one you might ask .... I have no idea.
It’s not like the olden days when you had leprosy and had to carry a bell with you. You don’t have to walk around wearing a sandwich board saying “I have epilepsy”. Some of the alert bracelet and bands and even necklaces are really funky now. There is a huge selection to choose from and I would go as far as to say there will be at least one to suit everybody.
Mine is from the I.D Band Company ( I believe I have mentioned them before) and is a silicone band. It’s a bit like one of those charity wristbands you can buy that they tell you help save lives only this time it’s saving my own life instead of someone else’s.
It goes way beyond my level of comprehension as to why some people refuse to wear one. I think it must be a vanity thing ... now don’t get me wrong I’m vain at times .... I would never leave the house without lipstick on and a fully co-ordinated outfit ... but I’m not vain or stupid enough to not wear my medical alert band.
While I may not like the teenagers attitude sometimes, hate walking behind slow people and detest any store that resembles a jumble sale .. I am actually quite partial to life.
If wearing my alert band means that someone saves my life and I can carry on moaning about slow walking people and moaning about my weight whilst eating a kinder egg, I’m more than happy to wear one!!!!

For all those people who choose not to because it’s not cool .. I would strongly recommend getting over yourself and purchasing yourself some form of medical alert attire. Ask yourself what’s the least cool scenario .. wearing an alert band or seriously suffering because nobody is aware you have epilepsy and nobody knows how to help you. Let’s be honest not everyone in this world has the savvy to ring an ambulance!!!
