5 top tips for making it through life with epilepsy
In all seriousness I would never really recommend listening to my advice as I never know what I’m talking about! However if someone was going to ask me for my top tips on making it through life with epilepsy these would be the ones I would share
- ALWAYS take your medication, at the right time and the right amount, even if you hate it. If you’re forgetful like me get yourself a pill box so you can clearly see if you have taken your medication that morning or whatever!! You can also set an alarm on your phone to remind you to fill the thing up every week too!
- Organise your life! There is nothing I love more than a good list. I have lists of work I need to do, jobs in the house I need to do, meetings, appointments. My entire life is pretty much on a list. Whether or not I actually do the things on my list is a completely different story ... but my point is the lists are there to keep me on track. I have serious memory problems sometimes and having an organised life helps me to at least keep the family alive and household running.
- Go plastic!! My epilepsy has created not only a lack of coordination and spatial awareness but also twitches and jerks. Over the past 7 years I must have broken more cups and glasses than a Greek at a wedding. One of the best things I ever did was buy a plastic glass with a lid and a straw and a travel mug!. No matter how many times I throw those bad boys around there are no breakages and no spillages. Life made easy!
- Always take spare medication and pain medicine with you wherever you go. I think this is easier for girls as we always have handbags with us but I would recommend you take medication with you whatever sex you are. If you ever get stuck somewhere you will then always have some spare epilepsy medication to take. We all know missing medication can trigger seizures and that is the last thing anyone wants.
- Invest in some comfy pjs or lounge clothing and a blanket to make your off days comfy. Nothing beats a pair of warm, snuggly pjs in my opinion.
